1974 lab was a minority gov and had a pact with libs to adopt their policies to an extent like holding scottish and welsh referendums in1979. they had to join with libs to stay in power.
when did sdp emerge?
after 1979 defeat 28 labour mps moved to a centre left party they called the SDP and one conservative joined. almost immediately they formed an alliance with the lib called sdp-lib alliance, and acted as a single party.
SDP-LIB alliance 1983?
they made an alliance i 1981 and stood in the 83 election and got 25% 2% less than lab. they then decided to form one party called the liberal democrats in 1988.

cameron began to move away from thatechrite policies to a more new labour ideology and was less anti eu than his predecessors
libdem conservative coalition policies
libdems allows conservatives to dominate the polices. lib dems most notorious polic was abolishing tuition fees but allows cons to increase it from 3K to 9K. they also allowed reduced spending to reduce the level of debt accumulated due to the 2007-8 financial crisis where money was borrowed. this meant public sector services were squeezed on. they wanted a proportional voting system for westminster, AV but they only held a 2011 referendum which some argue did badly due to lib dems ruined reputation of tuition fees which caused upset.
they even supported a more conservatice approach to economics and overall. their support fragmented
libdems turnout 2015?
plummeted to 8% from 23% worst since 1970.
8seats
libdems 2024 turnout and seats
12% of vote 1% more than 2019 and 72seats
why did libdes receive so many seats in 2024?
conservative vote collapsed due to their governing competency being undermined with multiple instances of poor conduct such as partygate 2021, lizz truss short leadership, and rishi sunaks national service, and rwanda plan which was seen as undermining human rights and liberties of uk residents. l
therefore, libdems recieved a mass amount fo seats due to tactical voting with labour to push out conservatives.
