Construction Technology Flashcards
(20 cards)
Name 3 of the approved building regulation documents
- Part A - structure
- Part B - Fire
- Part M - Access
- Part O - Overheating
- Part F - Ventilation
What responsibilities does the client have under CDM 2015
- F10 notification
- Appoint the principle contractor and principle designer
- Allow sufficient time and resources for the project
What responsibility does the principle designer have under the CDM 2015
- Liaise with the principle contractor
- Plan manage and monitor the health and safety during pre construction
- Ensure everyone cooperates and shares information required
What responsibilities does the principle contractor have?
- Liaise with the principle designer
- Manage and monitor health and safety during construction.
- Construction phase plan
- Provide welfare
- Give inductions to site
What are the different methods of construction used for foundations?
- Traditional strip / pad foundations
- Raft foundations
- Piled foundations
When would you use piled foundations as opposed to raft foundations?
If the solid is of poor quality and piled foundations are needed to reach better quality below the surface. Ground improvement.
How can the use of technology better the construction process?
- BIM (Asite) common date environment
- Let’s build genie belt
- Holobuilder photographic records
What is substructure and give examples of what is included.
Substructure is all parts of the structure below ground level including foundations, drainage and substructure brickwork
What is superstructure?
Everything found above GL that forms part of the structure.
What is the external envelope of a building?
The shell or enclosure of a building eg brickwork, windows, cladding etc
What are building regulations?
Statutory standards that set out the minimum performance of structures and buildings
What are the British standards?
Publications that give the recommended guidance for specifications and practices for products and services
What are the ISOs and give 3 relevant to construction
International organisation for standards relevant ones include:
9001 - quality management systems
14001- environmental management
45001- occupational health & safety
What are the main considerations for assessing the buildability of a site?
- Access and egress
- Soil condition
- Any structures and history of site
- Space for material and accommodation
- Area suitability (planning purposes)
What are temporary works?
Temporary works are works not forming the final building but are needed to facilitate it. Eg scaffolding, propping, temporary roads
Give an example of where you have contributed to the design of a project
Bath road project assessing the options of traditional, timber frame and steel frame construction. Advised that traditional would be the best option as this is how the project was tendered. Steel prices were varying significantly.
How do you ensure quality during the construction?
- Ensuring compliance with the ER’s
- Quality management systems (ISO9001)
- Offer Value engineering opportunities where possible
- Use of BIM to reduce the risk of defects and rework
Give an example of value engineering you have advised the client of
On the Bath Road project I advised to use an alternative flooring spec as the ERs had specified flooring that was prone to damage and had a poor slip resistance
How have you ensured compliance with the building safety Act?
On the Bath Road project I advised the client of the measures we were putting in place including a fire consultant to review drawings, profucucts and fire strategy and get them to independently sign off all fire stopping and fire doors
