Contemporary Technologies Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is a pedometer?
> wrist worn device measuring fitness activity
detects footfall during training
coach uses information to assess stride length or total energy output
What is a heart rate moniter?
> monitor strapped to chest/wrist
HR observed during training or competition
ensure heart rate operates within a predetermined zone
less effective for anaerobic activity
What are GPS trackers?
> worn throughout team games
assess distance covered/ speed of players
real time measures - determines effort
What are power meters?
> measure training intensity using a strain gauge
very accurate but expensive
used by rowers and cyclists
What are fitness machines?
> cycle ergometer, treadmill, stepper, cross trainer
moniter HR and give information about aerobic performance
What are isokinetic strength training machines?
> strength assessment lab machines
expensive, computerised
very accurate and controlled assessment of rate of force development, force of contraction, and joint angles
maximal strength and muscular endurance testing
What are force plates?
> inserted into the ground at take off area for a jump, sprint start etc
patterns of force made by the foot examined
shows where athlete can alter their foot posture for optimal use
What is video analysis software?
> software such as Quintic and dartfish
coaches highlight technical aspects of play/performance using drawing tools or playback facilities over footage
assess technical improvements over time
What are wind tunnels?
> blasting air at a stationary object in a tunnel and using smoke to illustrate layers of air flow
used to assess aerodynamics of bikes, cycle helmets, and a cyclists overall profile
How can technology be used to assess drag?
> computer programmes show how adjustments to shape can be made before construction of equipment (cycling, kayaking, bobsleigh)
What is laser sensor equipment and positional software?
> laser based system which assesses speed of a performer
What are some benefits of using technology?
> can be affordable - free fitness apps
accuracy - removes risk of human error
speed of results, ongoing data collection
instant - adjustments can be made during performance
ease of use
set training intensities, plan future training
monitor and review training
player comparisons
identify risk of injuries
What are the benefits of using technology?
> substitutions can be made based on data
monitor fitness (strengths and weaknesses)
manage tactics
set goals and motivate
personal responsibility and self-monitering
track training zones
compete against others
track rest and sleep
What are the disadvantages of using technology?
> can fail - loss of battery or signal, glitches
some require technical expertise
can be expensive
privacy issues, information breach
is all data user friendly and meaningful?
over reliance, doesn’t necessarily lead to behaviour change
