What are the primary components of a power plant layout?
HV generators, Primary Switching Center, Fuel Bladders, Control & Storage Facilities, Siting considerations (noise, access, security)
HV Generators vs LV Generators
HV: efficient, centralized, good for O&M
LV: remote locations, initial operations, back-up
Centralized Generation pros/cons
Pros: one focal point for generation
mass generation, all resources at one location, easy to maintain
Cons: easy target, requires many long lines for distribution, slower to initially set-up
Decentralized Generation pros/cons
Pros: more efficient
more resilient
easier to make repairs
Cons: much harder to maintain
not as easy to make a network
Radial v Loop primary distribution layout?
Radial - no backfeed capability; straightforward; quicker to install; more outage risks
Loop - backfeed capability with parked cables; essential for fault isolation and redundancy
Secondary Distribution Center
Transformer that converts 4160V from distribution and big generators to 208V/120V for facilities
150kVA transformer
Each SDC can support up to 16 secondary circuits - generally supports 8
Remote Area Lighting System (RALS)
208/120V secondary cable
Lights spaced every 125’
