  • vaccination is part of it but is not the one and only thing!!
  • biosecurity

vaccination is not the only part of an infection control. why is this

A
  • vaccines provide a SUPPLEMENT
  • very few vaccines protect all animals from disease
  • may lessen severity of clinical signs but do not prevent shedding of contagion
  • different levels of efficacy
  • vaccine failures: inadequate response, inadequate timing, vaccine/pathogen match (ex flu)

not a fail-safe way to protect from contagious disease!!

A
  • requires an idea of what type of facility: single barn, setup, etc
  • what type of horses? show, pasture pets, etc
  • age of horses: unvaccinated, etc
  • what pastures/environment: fenceline shared with another property?
  • traffic coming in ? shows? outside horses coming in and out?
