Control of Contagious Disease Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
control of contagious disease
A
- prevention rather than outbreak mitigation
- minimize exposure
- optimize disease resistance
2
Q
what is infection control
A
- vaccination is part of it but is not the one and only thing!!
- biosecurity
3
Q
vaccination is not the only part of an infection control. why is this
A
- vaccines provide a SUPPLEMENT
- very few vaccines protect all animals from disease
- may lessen severity of clinical signs but do not prevent shedding of contagion
- different levels of efficacy
- vaccine failures: inadequate response, inadequate timing, vaccine/pathogen match (ex flu)
not a fail-safe way to protect from contagious disease!!
4
Q
infectious disease risk assessment
A
- requires an idea of what type of facility: single barn, setup, etc
- what type of horses? show, pasture pets, etc
- age of horses: unvaccinated, etc
- what pastures/environment: fenceline shared with another property?
- traffic coming in ? shows? outside horses coming in and out?
