correlations Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is a correlation?
technique used to measure the strength and direction of same type of relationship between co-variables
what is the difference between correlations and experiments?
- experiements manipulate variables
- experiments determine cause and effect
- correlations look at strength of relationship
what is a positive correlation?
- when 1 variable increases another increases
eg caffeine increase= energy increase
what is a negative correlation?
when 1 variable increases other variable decreases
eg product price increaes= sales decrease
what is no correlation?
when theres no relationship at all between the variables
strong correlation coefficients?
negative= -1.0, -0.9, -0.8, -0.7
positive= 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0
moderate correlation coefficients?
negative= -0.4, -0.5, -0.6
positive= 0.4, 0.5, 0.6
weak correlation coefficients?
negative= -0.1, -0.2, -0.3
positive= 0.1, 0.2, 0.3
directional correlation hypothesis?
states which type of correlation it is
non-directional correlation hypothesis?
doesnt state which type of correlation it is, just says there is
what is a spurious correlation?
refers to connection between 2 variables that appears to be casual but is not
strengths of correlations?
- useful starting tool for research as suggest trends that lead to further research
- measure relationship between variables that cannot be manipulated
- quick and cheap to carry out + no manipulation of variables
limitations of correlations?
- can be misused and misinterpreted
- only show how variables related not why= no cause and effect
- interventing variables could be causing relationship between 2 co-variables
