data handling + analysis Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
what is a meta-analysis?
A
- statistical technique using secondary data
- researcher analyses all data from different studies
2
Q
why would someone use a metanalysis/ would not?
A
would:
- indentify trends/relationships to gain clear overview
- generalise data across larger pops
would not:
- incorrect conclusions can be drawn
- may not select relevant studies
3
Q
what is content analysis?
A
- quantifying qualitative content of written, verbal or visual material
- analyses qualitative data in a numerial way
4
Q
what is the process of content analysis?
A
- coding units set before analysis
- create categories
- keep tally of every time response fitted into category
- analyse tallies for each categories by turning into a percentage
5
Q
strengths of content analysis?
A
- complements other methods-> useful in longtitudional studies (detect changes and trends)
- reliable- easy to replicate
- ease of application- easy to perform, unexpensive, dont require contact with p’s
6
Q
limitations of content analysis?
A
- lack of causality- not performed in controlled conditions so dont know cause
- subjective/flawed results- based on own opinion
- descriptive- diff to analyse all the data and quantify it. dont reveal reasons for behaviour
7
Q
what are the processes of thematic analysis?
A
- familiarisation with data (read data to get immersed)
- coding (identify and org features of data)
- search for themes (identify patterns)
- review themes (check against data then refine)
- define + name themes
- write up (explain info gathered from analysis)
