How do we define policing?
The maintenance of law and order by a police force.
What does section 6(3) of the Police Act 1990 (NSW) say about police services?
3) Police services includes:
A) Services by way of prevention and detection of crime.
B) The protections of persons from injury or death, and property from damage, wether arising from criminal acts or in any other way and
C) The provisions of essential services in emergencies

Highlights the need to work with the community, that police are not above the law, prevention of crime rather than punishment and police are doing thier job when crime is absent rather than amount of arrests.

What is the difference between civil law and criminal law?
Civil Law - Deals with the rights and relationships between private citizens.
Criminal Law - Considered an offence against the community even if perpetrated against one individual.

What is common law?
Law is ‘common’ for everyone in society and derived from custom and judicial decisions rather than statues and constitutions.
What is case law?
Decisions made by previous judgements using precedence
What is statue law?
Written documents such as acts and regulations
Explain relationship between Common, Statue and Case law.
Common law provides a fair and structured forum to administer justice.
State Law proves judges with easy access to legislation
Case Law enables judiciary to interpret legislation.
What is policy?
A source of guidance stemming from legislation. Note: Law trumps policy… always!
