Explain the steps of the verbal communication process.
- The sender desires to make an idea known to the receiver.
- The idea is encoded and converted in a form that can be transmitted.
- The message is sent via communication channel (face to face, phone)
- The receiver decides the message and converts back to understandable idea.

What is cognitive bias, stereotypes and prejudice?
Confirmation bias - a tendency to only listen to information that confirms your ideology.
Anchoring bias - to be overly influenced by the first piece of information you receive.
Stereotypes- a preconceived idea either positive or negative
Prejudice- a negative preconceived idea or belief
What are the three types of empathy in policing?
Cognitive
Emotional
Compassionate
What is listening and attending?
Listening is hearing what someone has to say.
Attending is using body language to show interest.
Characteristics of active listening?
Eye contact
Pay attention
Defer judgement
Provide feedback
Respond appropriately
What are the general rules of use of force?
- Must be derived from law
-Must be reasonable, appropriate, necessary and proportionate - No more force than reasonably necessary
- Individual police are responsible for the use of force and must be able to justify it
Define the concepts of control and compliance.
Control - Either Physical or Psychological control
Compliance - Where the police have established both controls

What is the 55/38/7 formula about?
How we receive verbal communication:
55% from body language
38% from the way it’s said
7% from what is said
What is police legitimacy?
How the public perceive the police as a legitimate authority. This will cause cooperation if the public believe in the fairness of the process.
Why would police adopt ‘the mediator’ during investigative communication?
To help settle disputes or create agreements between parties.
Why would police take on the role of ‘the facilitator’ during investigative communication?
To facilitate a course of action to bring about an outcome. Facilitate the flow of information e.g. traffic crash, emergency situations

What is conflict?
When two or more people disagree about something and at least one of them decides to make an issue out of it.
What levels of conflict can arise from goal blockage?
Mild irritation
Anger
Aggression
Violence
Give an example of goal blockage
Someone unable to access their home that is in the outer perimeter of a crime scene
What is drive theory?
Something in the environment causing an internal drive to cause harm. E.g. alcohol, drugs, elevated arousal (group mentality)
What is the frustration-aggression hypothesis?
When a persons goal is block which causes frustration. This leads to anger. Anger leads to aggression.
What is Instinct theory?
Everyday stress builds in the psyche, if not realised can explode.
