CTE Flashcards
(20 cards)
what is neural plasticity
the brains ability to grow and change throughout the lifespan
whats synaptic pruning
process of removing extra weak or unused synaptic connections so that the neural transmission is as efficient as possible
what are synaptogenesis
formation of new synapses between the brains neurons
3 changes in the brain that can occur
experience INDEPENDENT plasticity
-changes that occur regardless of experiences(genetics)
experience EXPECTANT plasticity
changes that occur due to specific environmental cues that the brain expects to be exposed to .
experience DEPENDENT plasticity
unique brain changes due to your experiences(learning an instrument)
whats adaptive plasticity
the ability to respond to changing environments through learning or rewiring after damage has occurred
rerouting and sprouting
after injury occurs the neurons ability to rewire itself
whats an ABI acquired brain injury
brain damage which occurs after birth at any time during life
what can be some biological, psychological and social factors
biological- genetics, disorder,
psychological-thoughts,self esteem, personality,learning
social-relationships social support
what are some ABI examples
stroke
spatial neglect
whats mental stimulation
any activity that activates or enriches the mind
what are some examples
diet
exercise
whats CTE
neurological disease linked to repeated impacts to the head-progressive and fatal
what is the physiological cause of CTE
brain movement inside the skull
causes build up in tau protein
what is tau protein
helps maintain brain/neuron structure.health but too much can result in neuron quality and quantity decreasing
it accumilates and spreads( so basically too much tau protein
what is the diagnosis
autopsy is the only possible way for clear diagnosis
also difficult to diagnose due to similarities with other neuroogical disease
what is the cause of CTE
not entirely understood
head injuries
other risks include timing,location,severity,genetics,lifestyle
what are some symptoms of CTE
concerntration
attention
agression
memory disfunction
how many stages of cte are there
4
stage 1 is like headaches
stage 4 is depression, demensia, severe memory dysfunction
what is the treatment
currently incurable and irreversible
lifestyle habits protote health and wellbeing eg. diet etc
what are some ways to prevent CTE
changes for sager tackling
openness about symptoms
clear process to track injuries symptoms
don’t go back to sport too soon after head injury
