Q

what was the bay of pigs invasion

A

eisenhower gave the cia a go ahead to plan a military invasion of cuba to remove castro
- 15,000 anti castro cubans trained
- planned to land at night in a remote Cuban beach where thousands of anti-Castro Cubans would rise up and join their cause to march on Havana and force Castro out
-CIA told Cuban exiles that, as a last resort, the US navy and air force would become involved to help
-Invasion was ultimately an unmitigated disaster and a profound humiliation for Kennedy

Q

reasons why the invasion failed

A

-inexperienced volunteers (compared to the battle-hardened Cuban revolutionary army)
-USA didn’t want to be seen as involved so didn’t send ground troops or promised air support
-Castro’s government had found out about invasion and were waiting with 20,000 soldiers
-USA had wrongly assumed that most Cuban’s would support them

A

-Castro sends letter urging the USSR to launch a nuclear first strike against the US
-Khrushchev ignores instead sending a long and rambling telegram to Kennedy in which he appeals to the US president to work with him to de-escalate the conflict and ensure they didn’t ‘doom the world to the catastrophe of thermonuclear war’

20
Q

Who was killed on the 27th October 1962? How?

consequences of crisis

A
  • creation of the hotline between the white house & kremlins
  • awareness of nuclear weapons

  • first signs of detente
24
Q

when was the moscow test ban treaty

25
what was the moscow test ban treaty
prohibited above ground, underwater and outer space nuclear testing (USA withdrew its insistence about on-site inspections) -signed by the USA, USSR and the UK -France and China refused to sign
26
why was the moscow test ban treaty limited
-it didn't include underground tests (difficult to detect and differ from earthquakes)
27
significance of the treaty
-first collective agreement to establish some limitations on the nuclear arms race -confirmed some commitment to the principle of some form of easing of the tensions associated with the Cold War -idea that a nuclear war was a realistic possibility had been addressed -accepting the principle that on-site testing was not necessary was a show of trust towards the other powers
28
when was the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
1968
29
Why did the US and USSR agree on the NPT?
Given the excessive costs involved in the development and deployment of new and more technologically advanced nuclear weapons, both powers had an interest in negotiating agreements that would help to slow the pace of the arms race and limit competition in strategic weapons development.
30
what did the NPT do
-prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology. promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. pursue negotiations in good faith on disarmament measures. -signatories could not 'assist, encourage or induce any non-nuclear state to manufacture nuclear weapons' -However signatories could develop research and produce 'nuclear energy for peaceful purposes'
