* Use gauze to remove any remaining secretions from area surrounding the tube or stoma following suction
* Where there is difficulty in suctioning large volumes or thick secretions, consider using a size 12 FG catheter
* Wrapping the used catheter around a gloved hand and removing the glove over the wrapped catheter can assist in containing sections and sputum
