What does ‘cut back’ mean?
To reduce.
Examples: 1. ‘They are cutting back expenses.’ 2. ‘My family cut back on the amount of electricity we used last year.’ 3. ‘I decided to cut back on a lot of things this year.’
What does ‘embark on’ mean?
To start a new project or activity, usually one that will be difficult or take time.
Examples: 1. ‘After graduating from university, she embarked on a career in banking.’ 2. ‘He was about to embark on his expedition to Europe.’ 3. ‘After leaving college, Matthew embarked on an acting career.’
What does ‘frown upon/on’ mean?
To not approve of something.
Examples: 1. ‘Failure to attend classes is frowned upon.’ 2. ‘Personal phone calls are frowned on at work.’ 3. ‘In her family, any expression of feeling was frowned upon.’ 4. ‘Speaking loudly in libraries is frowned upon as it disturbs other readers.’
