What does ‘Account for’ mean?

A

To explain the reason for.

Examples: 1. Increase pollution may account for climate change. 2. Computers account for 10% of the country´s commercial electricity consumption. 3. How do you account for company´s high employee turnover? 4. In Mexico, remittances from Mexican workers to their families account for a significant portion of the country’s income. 5. She couldn’t account for her absence at the meeting.

What does ‘Allude to’ mean?

A

Mention in an indirect way.

Examples: 1. She kept alluding to our agreement, but she didn´t want to reveal it. 2. He alluded to his feelings for her. 3. The lawyer alluded to the man´s past. 4. She didn’t say his name, but she clearly alluded to her ex. 5. When I share a true story with my family, I allude to the people involved without mentioning their real names.

What does ‘Bring up’ mean?

A

To start discussing a subject.

Examples: 1. She brought the matter very late, so they didn´t have time to discuss it properly. 2. When the student brought up a problem he was having, the teacher was happy to help him. 3. Her husband asked her not to bring up the issue again. 4. I always tell my wife not to bring up political topics during breakfast. 5. He brought up a good point during the discussion.
