Day 2 - Out of course Flashcards
(23 cards)
When can a conductor become a competent person to be in the driving cab? (3)
1) To examine the line during darkness
2) Driver safety device (DSD) is defective
3) Driver vigilance equipment (DVE) is defective
What is the driver safety device?
A pedal which must be kept pressed down whilst the train is moving
What is the Driver vigilance equipment?
An alarm that sounds if there is no activity with the driving controls
What must you do before entering the cab?
1) Get permission from the DCM
2) Make sure your phone is switched off
Which doors MUST be kept locked during a journey? (3)
1) End gangway doors
2) End gangway doors where gangway connection can’t be made (ie, incompatible coupled units)
3) Doors that lead to areas not for public use, eg, cab doors, internal doors leading to vestibule areas with exposed DCP or slam doors
Why must you only travel in and operate the doors from the rear unit when 2 incompatible units are coupled together?
So there are competent people in each unit (driver in the front, conductor in the rear)
What are the conductor’s responsibilities if a train door becomes defective? (5)
1) Try operating the door 3 times
2) Lock the door out of use
3) Label the door out of use
4) Fill in the vehicle repair book
5) Report to maintenance control
When locking a door out of use what must you ensure?
That there is still a safe evacuation route available
What is the EBS?
Emergency Bypass Switch - it bypasses the break safety loop and allows the breaks to be released
If the EBS is activated what will NOT work?
1) Passcoms
2) Rear and intermediate break handles
One the driver informs you the EBS has been activated what must the conductor do?
1) Reach a clear understanding with the driver as to how they will stop the train in an emergency
2) Inform customers that if they need to stop the train, they must advise the conductor
3) Carry out regular train patrols
If there are multiple units and the EBS is applied what must the conductor do?
1) Transfer all of the customers in the rear to the front unit
2) Sit in the front cab of the rear unit in case of accidental train division
What is the Traction Interlock Switch?
It is another power safety loop, if the loop is broken, driver will not be able to take power, unless the TIS is activated in order to bypass it
What must conductors do when the TIS is operated?
1) Physically check all the doors on both sides of the train to ensure they are closed and secure
2) Reach a clear understanding with the driver on how to give ready to start signal (Green flag?)
3) Physically check the doors which are subsequently released when stopping at stations
What should the conductor do if the DKS becomes defective?
Use DKS at the front to allow customers to disembark
Talk to the driver
Report the issue to DCM and ask for permission to dispatch from the front of the train
If the DCP (door control panel) becomes defective what must the conductor do?
Stand by and remain at that door for the remainder of the journey (or get a competent person to do it - NORTHERN Safety critical member of staff)
What if the DCP that is defective is at the front of the train?
Call the DCM and get permission to dispatch from the front
What should you do if you don’t hear the ready to start buzzer repeated back to you?
Stop the train by either
1) giving one on the buzzer
2) pulling the passcom
then contact the driver
What must you NOT do if the buzzer seems to be defective?
Open your local door and step off the train - train could leave without you.
What is the max speed when a Bardic lamp is being used as a headlight?
20 mph
What is the max speed when a TOClight or temporery headlight is being used?
75 mph
What is the max speed if an outer window pane is broken?
100 mph if film is applied
What is the max speed if air suspension is defective?
Normal line speed, unless passengers can’t be moved, then 45 mph
