Emergency Working Day 1 Flashcards
(15 cards)
Why is temporary block working introduced?
When two or more consecutive signals are defective
What type of signalling is temporary block working (TBW) used on?
Only in track circuit block signalling
What is the principle of TBW?
One train in the temporary block working section at any one time
Explain the TBW process?
See handouts/poster
What is the difference between Temporary Block Working and Emergency Special Working?
ESW doesn’t require a hand signaller
The driver uses GSM-R to speak to signaller directly
Driver completes NR3190 and uses as a token
Driver speaks to signaller for permission to enter and leave the ESW section
Driver writes CANCELLED over the form once used and disposes of it
Exit signal is always at a notable location such as station, junction or tunnel
When would you be required to protect your own line from the rear?
When TBW or ESW is in operation
When would single line working be introduced?
If part of a double line is closed or having engineering works. Trains will now be running in either direction on the remaining line.
How is single line working made safe?
Either with pilot working or modified working
How does single line working affect the conductor?
If you stop at a station, the train will stop on the opposite side of the line.
You must release the doors on the correct side, being aware of any differences such as TRTS buttons, disabled access, dispatching from middle etc.
What is the definition of a train accident?
Collision with a train or rail vehicle
Collision with a road vehicle
Collision with a person
Collision with an obstruction
Fire on a train that means passengers are evacuated to running lines
Fire on a train that puts a passing train at danger
Derailment
Division (accidental) that causes another line to be obstructed
What is the conductor’s priority in the event of a train accident?
1) Check if the lines are obstructed (if unknown, treat as yes)
2) Decide the quickest way to stop any approaching trains
What should the conductor do next?
Place TCOCs on obstructed lines. If your train is fully derailed place on your own line too (protection from the rear)
How do you prioritise which lines to protect?
Using route knowledge, busiest lines, higher speed lines etc.
Name the components of a hazard warning panel?
Emergency action code
UN number
Specialist advice phone number
Company name or logo
Hazard warning sign
What must the conductor do in the event of an accidental train division?
1) Establish whether anyone has fallen from the train
2) Secure gangway end doors
3) Make sure passengers are in a safe position on the train
Report it to the Duty Control Manager
