Day 27 - liking Flashcards

1
Q

Previously, you learned about the modal verb mögen (to like).

When talking about liking a noun, Germans often use mögen, but when liking a verb, gern or gerne is added after the verb, depending on the region of the speaker.

Study the following example:
I like ice cream. Ich mag Eis.
I like to eat ice cream. Ich esse gern Eis.

You can also use gefallen (to be pleasing) with the dative case.
I like ice cream. Eis gefällt mir. (Lit. Ice cream pleases me)

To say something is your favorite, attach the prefix Lieblings- to the noun.
My favorite ice cream is chocolate. Mein Lieblingseis ist Schokolade.

To ask people what kind of things they like, use the phrase was für (what kind of).
What kind of music do you like to listen to? Was für Musik hören Sie gern?
What kind of ice cream do you like? Was für Eis magst du?

Now you can ask people about their hobbies and what they like to do. To practice today, ask your friends: Was machen Sie gern?

  1. They are sending me several pages.

“schicken” used more than “senden”

A

Sie senden mir viele Seiten. NO…Sie schicken mir mehere Seiten.

I would say senden is used more in a postal(?) Way for sending media “einen Brief senden” “eine Video senden” but you could also use schicken instead- I guess senden is more for things that are “passive” in the situation, while schicken is better to use when talking about humans or animals “Ich habe sie zu dir geschickt” “Ich habe den Hund weg geschickt”- so I guess schicken is a synonym but more used when the subject is active in the process
