Day 70 - In Order to, Without Doing, Man, Lassen, Je

Question 1

To express in order to ~ in German, use um ~ zu ~ , with the object coming between um and zu, and the verb coming after zu. If you use a verb with a separable prefix, zu goes in between.

Study the following examples:

You must study in order to pass the test.
Du musst lernen, um die Prüfung zu bestehen.

She is wearing a dress in order to look gut.
Sie trägt ein Kleid, um gut auszusehen.

To express without doing, use ohne ~ zu ~.

Study the following examples:

You can’t pass the test without studying.
Du kannst die Prüfung nicht bestehen, ohne zu lernen.

She spoke to me without looking at him.
Sie sprach mit mir, ohne ihn auszusehen.

Question 2

German uses the word man to mean one, a person, a human. English usually uses the word you or one to refer to an unnamed person.

Study the following examples:

One shouldn’t do such things.
Solche Dinge sollte man nicht tun.

You might think otherwise.
Man denkt vielleicht anders.

The verb lassen means to let, or to allow. It can also be translated as leave.

Study the following examples:

Let it be.
Lass es sein.

They won’t allow that.
Das lassen sie nicht.

Leave me alone.
Lass mich allein.

Je translates as ever or per, and is used to ask about experiences, as in: Have you ever…? To say that you have never done something, add noch nie.

Hast du je deutsches Bier getrunken?

Have you ever traveled to Berlin?
Bist du je nach Berlin gereist?
I haven’t traveled to Berlin.

   *This word literally means male cat, usually wild, like tomcat in English, but is used more often as a slang to say that you have a hangover.
8. MAN…one / person / human
9. SCHNUPFEN…runny nose
   *In the dictionary, this word is first listed as cold, but refers to the symptoms in your nose that result from a cold, rather than other symptoms like a headache or coughing.
10. AUS.REDEN…to finish talking / to make excuses
    *This is often used to say Let me finish talking, as well as used to make the noun: die Ausrede (-n) (an excuse). However, if you want to use the verb to make excuses, change aus’reden to heraus’reden.
