Day 3 Flashcards
Evolutionary trade off
An aspect of a characteristic that represents an adaptive compromise between two opposing evolutionary pressures; example the human pelvis represents a compromise between being narrow which is necessary for running at speed and being wide which is necessary for giving birth to a baby with a large head
food web
A community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains
Fundamental niche
The full potential range of the physical chemical and biological factors a species can use if there is no competition from other species
Herbivory
Interaction in which one animal (the herbivore) feeds on producers (such as plants)
Hexapoda
Sub phylum of insects
Hominins
The members of the human lineage after it split with the chimpanzee lineage
Homo
Genus of closest related species to humans
Homo erectus
“Up right man” these hominids became skillful hunters and invented more sophisticated tools for digging scraping and cutting. they also became the first hominids to migrate from Africa. also were the first to use the fire.
Homo ergaster
Workingman first fully bipedal large brained hominid
Homo habilis
A hominin relative of human beings that appeared in Africa between two and 3 million years ago and was able to make simple tools
Intermediate disturbance hypothesis
The concept that moderate levels of disturbance can foster greater species diversity then low (decreases competition ) or high levels of disturbance
Keystone species
Not necessarily abundant but exert a strong control on community structure due to a pivotal ecological role
Lophophorates
Ectoprocta and brachiopoda; coelomates with lophophores (feeding structures bearing ciliated tentacles)
Mammalia
Endothermic (most homeothermic), hair, young fed with milk produced by modified sweat glands (mammory glands), sound conducted through middle ear by three bones (malleus, incus, and stapes) each side of lower job made up of a single bone (the dentary) synapsid
Marsupials
Mammals who immature offspring complete their development in an external pouch
Microclimate
Very fine patterns of climate influenced by features of the environment such as shade areas and wind patterns
Mollusca
phylum of animals with a muscular foot, visceral mass, mantle and often a shell. have a mouth and anus and no segmentation. Includes snails clams and octopuses
Monotremes
Egg laying mammal’s
Mullerian mimicry
Evolution of two species both of which are on palatable and have poisonous stingers or some other defense mechanism to resemble each other
Multicellular dependent embryos
In tissue of female gametophyte , nutrients transferred , plants called embryophytes
Multicellular gametangia
Gametangia in gametophyte produce eggs in the archegonia and the sperm in the antheridia
Myxini
In which class of phylum Chordata or hog fish with craniums but no vertebrae and jaws classified
Natural selection
A process in which individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than other individuals because of those traits
