Diffusion Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What are the factors affecting diffusion?
A
Temperature, Surface area, concentration gradient.
2
Q
What is diffusion?
A
- Diffusion is how smells spread out through the air.
- Diffusion happens on its own when the particles spread out from on area of high concentration, where there are many of them, to areas of low concentration where there are fewer of them.
3
Q
How does temperature affect Diffusion?
A
- Higher temperatures increase the kinetic energy of particles, leading to faster diffusion
4
Q
How does Concentration gradient effect diffusion?
A
- A steeper concentration gradient (larger difference in concentration between two places) results in faster diffusion
-When the concentration gradient is steep (the difference large) particles more quicker to even things out, when the gradient is shallow (less difference) the movement is slower because the “push” driving diffusion is weaker.
4
Q
How does surface area effect diffusion?
A
- a larger surface area increases the rate of diffusion.
- with more area for particles to move across, more particles can diffuse, simultaneously speeding up the process
