Diffusion Flashcards
(11 cards)
What can diffusion happen in?
- Liquids
- Gases
- Through partially permeable membranes
Does it or does it not require energy for particles to move down a concentration gradient?
It does not require energy = PASSIVE
What does partially permeable mean?
When only some molecules are able to diffuse through the membrane
Name stuff that moves INTO the animal cell
- O2 for aerobic respiration (gas)
- Other cells and large molecules
Name stuff that moves OUT of the animal cell
- DNA (glycogen)
- C02 to blood capillaries
Name what WILL diffuse from this list and why:
1. Starch
2. Amino acids
3. Glucose
Glucose as it is small enough to fit through the membrane
Name what will NOT diffuse from this list and why:
1. Starch
2. Amino acids
3. Glucose
The starch and amino acids as they are too large to fit through the membrane
Define what diffusion means
The net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration (down the concentration gradient)
How does diffusion happen?
It only happens because molecules move randomly
Give an example of a high concentration and a low concentration
High: A place where a lot of molecules are quite close together.
Low: When the molecules spread out evenly
What does net movement mean?
The average or overall movement of molecules
