What is diffusion
Diffusion is the spreading out of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentrations. E.g: perfume through the air
What 3 factors effect the diffusion rate
The bigger the concentration gradient, the faster
High temperature will give a faster rate, the particles have more energy so move around faster
The larger the surface area of the membrane, more particles can pass through at once
What substances can move into and out of the cell membrane
Small molecules. E.g: oxygen, glucose, amino acids and water
Starch and protein can’t fit through the cell membrane
