Disk Partitioning Flashcards

1
Q

What is disk partitioning?

A

It is the process of dividing a disc into separate sections, each functioning as a distinct storage unit known as a partition. This practice allows for more efficient data management as each partition can be used for different purposes. For instance, one partition may contain the operating system, another for personal data, and a third for backup. This separation not only simplifies data organization, but also enhances the security and performance of the system.

Q

What are the (2) methods for partitioning a disk?

A

There are two different methods to partition a disk. One must choose between using the master boot record, also known as MBR, or the GUID partition table or GPT for short, as the partition table. The MBR is an older standard that supports discs up to two terabyte in size and allows up to four primary partitions.

In contrast, GPT is a newer standard that supports discs larger than two terabyte and allows for virtually unlimited primary partitions. GPT is also more resilient to data corruption and includes redundancy by storing multiple copies of the partition table across the disc.

Q

Whats a file system?

A

It keeps track of all the files on the disk, including their physical location on the drive, their size, and their attributes like permissions and timestamps.
