Hardware Firewalls Flashcards

1
Q

What is a firewall?

A

It is is a hardware or software device that protects a network by filtering incoming and outgoing traffic based on a special access control list or ACL. This list determines which sources are acceptable to receive packets from and which are not. A hardware firewall is a physical implementation of this. It filters incoming and outgoing traffic, serving as a gatekeeper, and the front line of defense in preventing malware from taking root in a network.

Q

What is a hardware firewall?

A

It offer a dedicated defense mechanism between the internal network and the Internet. This positioning allows for more effective monitoring and control of network traffic, enhancing overall security. Using information such as the ports, protocols, and IP addresses, firewalls identify which packets should be forwarded and which not. This service is known as packet filtering. Another valuable function of hardware firewalls is stateful inspection. This feature monitors the state of active network connections, such as the source and destination addresses, ports, and protocols. A third feature of a hardware firewall is a DMZ or demilitarized zone. This location or network segment is positioned between an internal network and the external Internet. It’s purpose is to host servers that require public access, such as web or gaming servers while keeping them isolated from the sensitive internal network.
