Q

Define the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)?

A

OEMs create hardware and software components
like processors, memory, network cards, operating systems and more.

OEMs introduce potential security concerns because the companies telling you
the finished computer doesn’t have direct control over every aspect of the hardware’s production. This means checking the reputation of both the device provider and the OEMs for
evidence of regular testing, auditing, and establishing clear security protocols through throughout the supply chain.

Q

What is Defining Trusted Platform Module (TPM)?

A

The Trusted Platform Module is based on a set of standards created by the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) in 2003. The TCG is a nonprofit organization established to create, promote, and define a hardware-based root of trust. As you will learn more about later, a root of trust is an approach to making computers and devices more secure.

Trusted Platform Module (TPM), a microchip providing security features established through industry standards. TPM ensures a root of trust for measurement, securing the boot-up process by verifying processes and comparing them to stored signatures. Integrated with Windows, TPM enhances security through features like secure boot processes and BitLocker drive encryption, safeguarding against unauthorized access and data breaches.

TPM refers to a platform that has been safeguarded to the standards established by the TPM. This can be achieved in several ways; one common approach is using a specialized microchip on your motherboard, which enforces these standards each time the device boots up. TPM is designed to provide a secure foundation for various security processes, including data protection, encryption, and authentication.
