(16 cards)
Having two distinc ego states that act independantly of each other
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
Memory loss following a stressful or traumatic experience
Dissociative Amnesia
Altered experience of the seld or ones environment
Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder
Types of Discociative Amnesia are (4):
Localized, Selective, Continuous, Generalized.
Forget personal Identities, details of past, flee to entirely different location..
Fugue - it can be brief, or the person can be completely reinvented.
Two or more personalities in Dissociative Identity Disorder are called
Subpersonalities - unique memories, behaviours, thoughts and emotions.
The dominant personality at any time is called
Host, primary or personality.. 1 may appear more often, switching is sudden.
Subpersonalities… how many in women? In men?
Average 15 in women and 8 in men.
What kind of relationships to personalities have with eachother?
Mutually amnesic relationships – subpersonalities have no awareness of one another
Mutually cognizant patterns – each subpersonality is well aware of the rest
One-way amnesic relationships – most common pattern; some personalities are aware of others, but the awareness is not mutual
Common personality examples:
Child Alters (do not age) associaited with childhood trauma. - Perscutor Personality : inflict pain or harm. AND Helper/Protector: help individual perform tasks outside of their abilities, deal with abuse etc.
How do sub-personalities differ? Characteristics as well?
identity, physiological, abilities and preferences.
A theory on DID: Momentary forgetting of trauma leads to a drop in anxiety, which increases the likelihood of future forgetting. Escape Behaviour
Behavioural View
If people learn something when they are in a particular state of mind, they are likely to remember it best when they are in the same condition
State- Dependent Learning
Leading therapies for Dissociative disorders are?
Psychodynamic Therapy, Drug Therapy, and Hypnotic Therapy.
How do we help people with DID?
Work slowly to merge identities into one. Therpay is ongoing to maintain one identity.
Dissociative Disorder that differs from most is:
Depersonalization/Derealization (derealization more related to outside world) where the persons body feels unreal or foreign to them. Feel as if they are not in their body, observer.
