What happened
Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the globe took place between 1577 and 1580, making him the first Englishman to sail around the world. He set off from England with five ships, though only his ship, the Golden Hind, completed the journey.
Along the way, he raided Spanish settlements in South America, capturing a vast amount of treasure—over £500,000 worth (a huge sum at the time). He explored parts of the west coast of North America and claimed land for England, calling it “New Albion.”
His return in 1580 was celebrated as a major achievement, and Queen Elizabeth I knighted him. The journey boosted England’s reputation as a naval power and challenged Spain’s dominance at sea.
