What is the ISM code?
International safety management code:
- it establishes safety management objectives and requires a safety management system to be implemented on every ship.
What is the main difference between port and flag state inspections?
In a port state inspection, you must comply with the national laws of the country of the port. In a flag state inspection, you must comply with the national laws of the country the vessel is registered with.
What is LPP and where is it measured from and to?
Length between perpendiculars. Stern - where the rudder shaft ends
Bow - where the water intersects the bow.
What is LOA?
Length overall and it is the overall length of the ship from bow to stern.
What is bale capacity?
Volume of space inside the cargo holds with no obstructions.
What is grain capacity?
The cubic capacity for cargo that flows to the ships side.
What is block stowage?
When cargo that is to be offloaded at the same port is stored together and cargo to be offloaded at a different port is stored seperately.
What is broken stowage?
The amount of unused space due to the irregularity of the shape of cargo or hold. It is expressed as a percentage of total space available.
What is break bulk?
Non-containerised cargo so individual items.
What are cargo battens?
Longitudinal timbers fitted to the ships frames to protect the steel hull from cargo
What is a ceiling?
Timber placed at the bottom of a cargo space to protect the ship from damage from cargo.
