What is dysfunctional families about?
Idea that family relationships could be a casual factor is a development on theories such as the schizophrenogenic mother
What is it not based on?
Unconscious concepts and looks at dynamic of family relationships instead

What is the double bind theory?
Sz is a consequence of abnormal and inadequate patterns of communication
What is the child exposed to in the double bind theory?
Social interactions with two conflicting messages, receives mixed messages, trapped in situations they fear are doing something wrong but too scared to ask, cannot respond effectively
How does the mixed messages lead to developing symptoms of schizophrenia?
Learns to perceive the world in terms of contradictory input, leads to internal conflict which manifests into delusions and hallucinations

When families persistently exhibit negative emotions such as verbal criticism, hostility, emotional over-involvement in life
What did Brown find?
People discharged from psychiatric care into household with EE were often readmitted.
What did Butzlaff and Hooley find?
Reviewed over 200 cases of EE, 70% relapsed with EE families compared to 30% with non EE families
What is a strength of dysfunctional families?
Berger- interviewed those with sz, reported higher rate of recall of double bind statements by mothers, however difficult to know if recall is accurate as they loose touch with reality
What is a weakness of dysfunctional families?
Not scientific, non scientific methods are used e.g. questionnaires, subject desirability bias may occur as families may not want to tell the truth
What is another strength of dysfunctional families?
Practical application, family therapy created, helps improve communication to reduce effects of double bind and relapse of EE
What is another weakness of dysfunctional families?
Deterministic- cant choose how they are treated and have no control, however it can make symptoms more predictable
