What are the 4 main sociocultural factors?
Life events, urbanicity, social isolation, ethnicity and discrimination
What is life events?
Stressful traumatic life events been suggest to trigger onset of SZ, reason is unknown, linked to changes in NT levels in brain
What did brown and birley find?
50% experienced major life event 3 weeks before s episode, 12% 9weeks prior
What is urbanicity?
Urban living doesn’t suit evolutionary traits of humans, explain higher rates of MH disorders, increase of social stress could trigger SZ
What did Van os et al find?
An increase in incidence of schizophrenia in people born in urban areas
How do social isolation cause SZ?
Individual doesn’t get feedback on inappropriate thoughts and behaviours they have so nuture them and become resistant to change. Symptoms go unnoticed for long
What did Jones et al find?
Longitudinal study, 5362, 30 cases diagnosed, more likely to show solitary play at 4 and 6 and at 13 rate themselves less socially confident
