Psychodynamic explanation Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is regression?
Defence mechanism, stress can cause the adult to go back to the oral stage (Freud)
What isn’t developed at the oral stage?
No ego, nothing stopping how ID operates
What symptoms of Schizophrenia represent the unchecked activities of the ID?
Hallucinations and delusions
What happens to the individual?
They loose touch with reality and cannot distinguish between reality, desires and fantasies
What is the schizophrenogenic mother?
Mother who cannot draw clear boundaries/differentiating between her needs and the childs.
What does Reichman blame?
The mother for causing schizophrenia, the distrust and resentfulness leads to the child becoming psychotic
What are a few characteristics of the schizophrenogenic mother?
Cold and distant, overprotective, rejecting, fearful of intamacy
What is a strength of the psychodynamic explanation?
Mednick- children raised in high risk families not high risk, 17 of high risk group were diagnosed within 10 years whereas one from control group was.
What is a weakness of the psychodynamic approach?
Mischled- A mother acting aloof and unresponsive towards her child with sz but normal with other children, increases the likelihood of development and the symptoms. Shows that it could cause changes in the mother
What is another strength of the psychodynamic approach?
deterministic- cannot control fixations, and cant control if you are frustrated or overindulged.
What is another weakness of the psychodynamic approach?
Unfalsifiable- cannot provide scientific evidence to test hypothesis, cannot say for certain sz is caused by the ID or oral fixation. Lack of trsut in explanation.
