Ecology- PAPER 2 Flashcards
(32 cards)
What is a habitat?
place where organism lives
What is a population?
all organism of one species living in a habitat
What is a community?
the population of different species living in a habitat
What is the definition of abiotic factors?
non living factors in an environment
What is the definition of biotic factors?
living factors in an environment
What is an ecosystem?
the interaction of a community of living organisms with non living parts of the environment
What is interdependence?
where each species depends on other species for food, shelter, pollination and seed dispersal
What are some examples of abiotic factors?
moisture level, light intensity, temperature, carbon dioxide level, wind intensity and direction, oxygen level, soil pH and mineral content
What are some examples of biotic factors?
new predators arriving, competition, new pathogens, availability of food

What are the 4 stages of the water cycle?
evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation
What is evaporation?
energy from the sun makes water evaporate from land and sea turning it into water vapour
What is transpiration?
when water evaporates from plants
What is condensation?
water vapour cools and condenses to form clouds
What is precipitation?
water falls from clouds onto land (as either rain, snow or hail)
What is decay?
when complex materials are broken down into more simple molecules which can then be reused
What are examples of decomposers?
- bacteria
- fungi
What are examples of detrivores?
-invertebrates
What are some examples of factors that affect decay?
- temperature
- water availability
- oxygen availability
- number of decay organisms

How do gases in our atmosphere keep energy in?
act like an insulating layer, absorb most of the energy that would be radiated into space and re-radiate it in all directions
What are the main greenhouse gases we worry about?
carbon dioxide and methane
What are the consequences of global warming?
- sea levels rising
- changes in species distribution
- changes in migration patterns
What are some ways we use land for?
- building
- quarrying
- farming
- dumping waste
