Effective communication Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is verbal communication?
Verbal communication uses spoken language and includes aspects like tone, speed, pitch, and fluency to convey meaning.
What is non-verbal communication?
Non-verbal communication involves body language, facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, posture, physical contact, and personal space.
What are open questions used for?
To encourage detailed responses and gather broad information, e.g., “How have you been feeling?”
What are closed questions used for?
To obtain specific information or confirm details, e.g., “Did you take your medicine today?”
What are probing questions?
They build on previous answers to explore further, e.g., “Tell me more about the headaches you’ve been getting.”
What are leading questions and why should they be avoided?
They suggest a preferred answer and may bias the response, e.g., “You take the tablets with food, don’t you?”
What are complex questions and why should they be avoided?
They contain multiple parts and may confuse the responder, e.g., “What’s your name, address, and date of birth?”
Name four types of barriers to effective communication.
Personal, language, physical, and environmental barriers.
Give an example of a physical barrier to communication.
Sitting behind a desk, which can discourage open interaction.
How do personal barriers affect communication?
Beliefs, confidence, knowledge, or emotional state can limit effective exchange of information.
What is the role of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in healthcare communication?
CBT helps understand how thoughts influence feelings and behaviour, often referenced in communication for managing psychological symptoms like anxiety or stress.
