endocrine system Flashcards
(22 cards)
What general term do we give for the chemicals secreted by the endocrine system?
hormones
What are the organs called that secrete these hormones ?
Endocrine/Exocrine glands: pineal, pituitary, thyroid,
parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes, adrenal
Where are these chemicals secreted?
Directly into the bloodstream
What types of cells have receptors for particular hormones?
Target cells
What is the link between the Endocrine system and the Nervous system?
hypothalamus
Pituitary Gland
hangs by a stalk from the inferior surface of the hypothalamus
Pineal Gland
roof of 3rd ventricle of the brain
Parathyroid Gland
on the posterior surface of the thyroid gland
Adrenal Gland
top of the kidneys
Thyroid Gland
base of the throat, just inferior to the Adam’s apple
Pancreas –
close to the stomach in the abdominal cavity
Testis –
suspended in the scrotum, outside of the male pelvic cavity
Ovary
female pelvic cavity
What are the two lobes of the Pituitary Gland?
Anterior and Posterior Lobes
What are the two regions of the Adrenal Gland?
Outer – Adrenal Cortex and the
inner Adrenal Medulla
What disorder results from a hypersecretion of GH during growth and development?
Gigantism
What disorder results from a hyposecretion of GH during growth and development?
Pituitary Dwarfism
What disorder results from a hypersecretion of GH after growth and development?
Acromegaly
goiter.
goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. It can be caused by a lack of Iodine in the
diet and can be fixed by adding iodine back into the diet.
Addison’s Disease
Symptoms of Addison’s are: low electrolytes, decreased water, bronze tone,
muscle weakness, lack of ability to cope with stress and suppression of the
immune system. Addision’s affects the adrenal glands and is a result of
under secretion of the hormone Aldosterone
Cushing’s Syndrome
Also called “Moon Face” from the filling out of the face and “Buffalo Hump”
from the outward projection of the cervical region of the back. Other systems
include, depressed immune system, increased blood pressure, swelling, and
weakening of bones. Results caused from an over secretion of a hormone
Aldosterone of the Adrenal glands on the kidneys
Diabetes Mellitus
Pancreas does not secrete enough insulin for the body to be able to take in glucose.
Insulin injections are a common treatment
