nervous system Flashcards
(48 cards)
The Nervous System is divided into what two main subdivisions
Central Nervous System (CNS)
(PNS) Peripheral Nervous System
What two structures make up the CNS
Brain
Spinal Cord
What makes up the PNS
All the nerves outside of the CNS
What are the two main subdivisions of the PNS
Sensory - Afferent
Motor - Efferent
What is the function of sensory or afferent neurons?
Carries impulses to the spinal cord or brain from the receptors
What is the function of motor or efferent neurons?
Carries impulse away from the spinal cord or brain to a muscle or gland
What is the function of an interneuron or association neuron
Relays the information between the sensory and motor neurons in the spinal cord.
two main subdivisions of the motor or efferent nervous system and there functions
Somatic Nervous System - voluntary
Autonomic Nervous System - involuntary
What are the two subdivisions of the autonomic nervous system? And what are their
functions
Sympathetic Nervous System - fight or flight
Parasympathetic Nervous System - resting and digesting
cerebrum (and its four lobes
the largest part of the brain / carries out cognitive
functions, interprets input from the senses, controls movement of skeletal
muscles - see Brain Power
Cerebellum
the second largest part of brain/coordinates movement and helps your balance
Brainstem
connects the brain to spinal cord
what are Gyri
bumps on the brain to increase surface area
Thalamus
relaying sensory and motor signals, as well as regulation of
consciousness and alertness
Hypothalamus
controls your body’s temperature, water balance, metabolism,
thirst, appetite, sex drive, pain, and pleasure centers
Medulla oblongata
involuntary activities such as breathing, heart beat
Pons
control breathing
Dendrite
short extensions that receive the impulse
Axon
long extension that carries the impulse away from the neuron
Cell body
contains the nucleus and other organelles
Myelin Sheath
white, fatty, insulating covering of the Schwann Cell
Schwann Cell
cells around the axon that insulate - (Play-Doh)
Axon Terminals
at the end of the axon / they release neurotransmitters
What is a synapse
Space between 2 neurons
