Energy systems and ATP resynthesis Flashcards

(4 cards)

1
Q

Describe the Glycolytic Energy System

A

-Glucose broken down into pyruvic acid
- Pyruvic acid converted to lactic acid
-Energy yield is 2 ATP
-Anaerobic reaction
-Reaction happens in sarcoplasm of muscle
-Enzyme for reaction is PFK

Q

Evaluate the Glycolytic Energy System (benefits)

A

-Quicker to provide energy than Aerobic system
-Has higher energy yield than PC system (PC=1ATP, G=2ATP)
-Provides energy for longer (2-3 minutes) than PC system (10secs)
-Anaerobic – so no delay waiting for increased supply of O2

Q

Evaluate the Glycolytic Energy System (drawbacks)

A

-Slower to provide energy than PC system
-Has much lower energy yield than Aerobic system (G=2ATP, Aerobic=38ATP)
-Provides energy for shorter duration than Aerobic system (2 hrs+)
-Glycolytic is the only system to produce fatiguing by-product
(Lactic Acid)

Q

Explain when Glycolytic Energy System would be predominant in supplying energy for ATP resynthesis

A

High intensity exercise for the duration 1-3 minutes
(as PC stores are depleted after 10 secs) E.g. 400m / 800m run
