Fluid Mechanics (DRAG) Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is DRAG?
Drag is the resistive force acting against the forward motion of an athlete
what is lift?
Lift is the force that acts perpendicular to the direction of motion.
What are 4 Factors affecting DRAG?
-Velocity
-Surface characteristics
-Streamlining and shape
-Frontal cross-sectional area
How does velocity affect DRAG?
The greater the velocity (speed) the greater the drag/resistance. E.g. strokes
How do surface characteristics affect DRAG?
The smoother the surface, the
less the resistance/drag. E.g. a swimming cap.
How does FCSA (of a moving body) affect DRAG?
The larger the cross-sectional area, the greater the drag. E.g. diving
How does streamlining and shape affect DRAG?
The more streamlined and
aerodynamic the shape the lower the drag. E.g. keeping the body in a long, narrow, and rigid position, with the head tucked and aligned with the body.
