Ears - otitis externa
Inflammatory reaction
Acetic acid - ear calm for mild symptoms
Paracetamol - pain
If it doesn’t get better, refer to GP for Otomize - neomycin and dexamethasone
Otitis Media - Viral bacteria
More common in children,self limiting and resolves in 3-7 days
Can be viral or bacterial
If it gets better will mean anti- viral
Antibiotics if they don’t get better
Symptoms of Otitis media
- Ear pain
- Fever
-irritability
Cough - Rhinorrhora - runny nose
Ear wax
Protective film in ear, remove if causes hearing loss or can’t look into ears
Olive oil
Sodium bicarbonate too
Rhinitis - nose
Can be an allergic or non allergic
Allergens - trees, pollen etc
Blocked runny nose, itchiness
This is all often self limiting but saline drops/spray can help, also warm moist air, menthol and eucalyptus
Nasal Corticosteroid
Used for nasal Polyps - soft painless growth inside nose
Don’t use corticosteroids in untreated nose infection
Nasal decongestants - Ephedrine
-ephedrine better than oxymetazoline
- 7 days max(rebound congestion if used longer
- Rebound congestion is symptoms getting worse because used nasal decongestants too long
- Avoid in under 6 y/o

One pack maximum at a time
Ipratropium for vasomotor symptoms
Chronic - long term
Sneezing, watery discharge
Stuffy nose
Different from allergic rhinitis - don’t have watery eyes and scratchy throat
Meds that can cause dry mouth
Antimuscarinics eg. Hyoscine and oxybutynin
Salivary glands complications - infections, obstruction,cancer
Diuretics
Antipsychotics - the newer ones like quetiapine
TCA - Tricyclic antidepressants
Asda.T
Chlorhexidine
Stops plaque formation, prevents candidiasis
Can’t replace brushing and flossing

Tooth abscess
Amoxicllin and metronidazole for 5 days
