rheumatic fever - can cause long lasting heart damage
what are the presentations of pharyngitis caused by diphtheriae
“bull neck” appearance, can kill due to airway obstructions
death caused by toxin produced from pseudomembranes formed, which causes arrhythmia
how is diphtheriae spread
human to human
is non toxigenic strains of diphtheriae harmful
no, they only colonise airway
how is diphtheriae diagnosed?
culture (throat/nasopharyngeal swab) as its a bacteria!
how is diphtheriae prevented?
vaccination! - dtap/tdap
antibiotics prophylaxis for close contacts
what is otitis externa?
skin infection in the external auditory canal
