enzymes Flashcards
(6 cards)
what is an enzyme
proteins that speed up chemical reactions they are also called biological catalyst
-can be reused
- highly specific
-often end in ‘ase’
why are enzymes important?
speed up chemical reactions
-build complex molecules from simpler one(anabolism)
-break down large molecules to small(catabolism)
-allows reaction to occur at a rate that suits body)
how do enzymes work?
1- lock and key model
2- induced fit
what are the factors that effect enzymes?
concentration gradient
concentration of substrate
removal of products
temperature
ph
co factors
enzyme inhibitors
what is activation energy?
energy needed to start a chemical reaction
-enzymes function by lowering activation energy
what are the different types of enzymes?
protease- break down proteins(e.g polypeptides to peptides)
amylase- breakdown carbohydrates(e.g. salivary amylase breakdown starch to maltose.)
lipases- breakdown fats(e.g. pancreatic lipase breakdown fats to fatty acids and glycerol)
nucleases- breakdown DNA&RNA
