Sources of ethanol
alcoholic beverages, perfumes, colonges, mouthwashes, hand sanitisers, detergents, methylated spirits, vanilla extract
Lethal dose of ethanol in an adult if taken as a single ingestion
5-8g/kg
10ml/kg
Lethal dose of ethanol in a child if taken as a single ingestion

How to calculate mass of ethanol (g)
vol ingested (L) x % amount of ethanol in the product consumed x 0.8 x 10
When does serum ethanol concentration peak post ingestion
60-90min
At what serum concentration does ethanol cause death
> 98mmol/L
Clin F of mild ethanol intoxication

CLin F of severe ethanol intoxication
Coma, ataxia, difficulty sitting upright, hypoglycemia, seizures, pulmonary aspiration
Clin F of life threatening ethanol intoxication
coma, refractory hypotension, metabolic acidosis, respiratory depression, cardiac arrest
When are investigations undertaken for ethanol intoxication
Moderate to severe features or if in a child

Serum ETOH conc
BGL
UEC
Blood gas and lactate
Indications for hemodialysis in ethanol intoxication
Hypotension requiring use of inotropes + ETOH conc of >98 mmol/L
