(14 cards)
Features of acute cyanide poisoning
Unconsciouness
CV instability
Breath - bitter almond smell
Bright red venous blood
Antidote for acute cyanide poisoning
Hydroxycobalamin (vit B12)
Which occupations increase exposure to cyanide
Electroplating, mining, plastic manufacturing
Indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy in carbon monoxide poisoning
Significant neurological symptoms
High carboxyhaemaglobin level
Evidence of severe metabolic acidosis
Clin F of blue ringed octopus sting
Sudden resp distress
Paralysis
Unresponsiveness within minutes of exposure
Clin f of box jelly fish stings
Immediate severe pain and visible welts on skin, CV collapse, death
Clin F of stonefish envonomation
Intense localised pain
Clin f of cone snail envenomation
Paralysis beginning with localised numbness and pain at the sting site - progress slowly to generalised paralysis
Clin f of irukandji jellyfish stings
Severe generalised pain, sweating, nausea, HTN
ST segment changes T wave inversion, troponin may be elevated
Mng of blue ringed octopus sting
Treatment for blue-ringed octopus envenomation is primarily supportive, as there is no antidote. The patient will likely require intubation and mechanical ventilation until the effects of the toxin wear off, which can take several hours to days. Prompt recognition and respiratory support are crucial for survival.
Tx of calcium channel blocker overdose
Calcium administration
High dose insulin
Vasopressor support
Symptoms of stimulant OD
headache, chest pain, vomiting and muscle cramps. including tachycardia, hypertension, diaphoresis, fever, mydriasis and hallucinations
What is gamma hydroxybutyrate
CNS depressant often used recreationally
Features of gamma hydroxybutyrate overdose
Sudden onset of decreased consciousness without focal neurological signs
Resp depression
Mild bradycardia and hypotension
Lack of response to naloxone
Rapid recovery within a few hours
