what is a limitation of informed consent? 2
participant may not fully understand what they are taking part in.
researchers are not always able to accurately predict the risks or benefits of taking part
what is a limitation of deception
subjective judgement: costs/flaws are a matter of opinion
what is a limitation of privacy
there is no shared understanding of what constitutes a public place
what is a limitation of confidentiality
confidentiality can’t be guarenteed; it is still possible to work out who someone is from the info provided
what is a limitation of the right to withdraw
the experiment may not be able to finish and so they feel pressured to stay
what is a limitation of protection from harm?
psychological harm may not appear straight away
how do you overcome the issue of informed consent
particpants are told the nature/purpose of the study and they given written agreement. or get presumtive consent: asking someone similar
how do you overcome the issue of deception?
deception is only okay if the benefits and risks of the study weigh up
debrief the participant afterwards
how do you overcome the issue of privacy
do not study the participant in a private place
how do you overcome the issue of confidentiality
researchers do not use/publish the name and info of the participants eg ‘person X’
how do you overcome the issue of the right to withdraw
participants are allowed to withdraw from the experiment or stop their data being published
how do you overcome the issue of protection from harm
do not put them in any risk and stop the study if harm is suspected
