Sampling Flashcards
(10 cards)
what is stratified sampling?
a sample of participants produced by identifying different subgroups according to their frequency in the population. p’s are randomly selected from those subgroups
what is systematic sampling?
a sample obtained by selecting every nth person; the numerical interval is applied constantly
what is volunteer sampling?
a sample of participants that relies solely on volunteers to make up the sample
what is opportunity sample?
a sample of participants produced by selecting people who are most easily available at the time of the study
what is random sample? and what are the methods used for it
a sample of participants produced by using a random technique so that everyone has an equal chance of being selected.
could use: lottery method, random number table/generator
what is a pro and con of stratified sample?
+ more representatve (proportional and randomly selected)
- very time consuming
what is a pro and con of systematic sample?
+ unbiased and objective
- not truly unbiased/random unless you select a number using a random method
what is a pro and con of volunteer sample?
+ variety of participants; more representative and less biased
- volunteer bias: volunteer participants have special characteristics such as being more highly motivated than randomly selected participants
what is a pro and con of opportunity sample?
+ easy and quick to find participants
- biased; small selection of population, doesnt include certain types of people
what is a pro and con of random sample?
+ unbiased as everyone has an equal chance
- time consuming
