Experimental design Flashcards
(10 cards)
what are the 3 types of experimental design?
- repeated measures
- matched pairs design
- independent group design
what is repeated measures?
each participants takes part in every condition under test
what is matched pairs design?
pairs of participant are matched in terms of key variables i.e. age
what is independent group design?
participants are allocated to 2 groups representing different levels of the IV
what are the limitations of repeated measures?
order effects (fatigue/boredom/practise effect) demand characteristics
what are the limitations of matched pairs design?
difficult and time consuming to match
hard to control all the participant’s variables
what are the limitations of independent group design?
cant control all the participants different characteristics or abilities
how do u overcome the limitations of repeated measurs
counterbalancing: ensures every condition is tested first or second in equal amounts
how do u overcome the limitations of matched pairs
restrict the number of variables to match on and conduct a pilot study
how do u overcome the limitations of independent group design
randomly allocated participants to conditions to distribute variables evenly (done using random techniques)
