Ethnic Differences In Crime Flashcards
(6 cards)
There are real ethnic differences in offending
Kea and young argue that ethnic differences in statistics refect real ethnic differences in offending. Crime is the product of relative deprivation, subcultures, and marginalisation something ethic minority’s are most likely to be effected by. The police are also more likely to discriminate ems and treat them harsher
Evaluation of there are real ethic differences in offending
Lea and youngs view of police racism as arrest rates for Asians may be lower than blacks, not becuase they are less likely to offend, but because police stereotypes the groups very differently
Ethnic differences are socially constructed
Black criminality is a myth created by racist stereotypes. Black groups are no more criminal but are victims of labelling. EM crime is a form of political resistance against racist society which has roots in their cultures earlier struggles. Anti-colonial struggles taught them how to resist oppression through riots. When this resistance was psracticed in England it was criminalised by the British state
Evaluation of ethnic differences are socially constructed
The first generation of immigrants were law abiding so it is unluckily that this anti-colonial struggle was passed on though generations
More recent approaches
Ethnic minorities are more likely to live in poorer neighbourhoods where crime rates are overall very high. The young people come into contact with more affluent people and become relatively deprived causing them to commit crime
Evaluation of more recent approaches
White people are effected by these factors we’re more likely to commit crime so ethnicity cannot be the cause
