Positivist victimology
Some people have victim proneness. This means they have characteristics that make them more vulnerable to becoming victims. Women, the elderly, and people with a lower IQ are more likely. They invite their victimisation by doing things such as displaying their wealth. Most victims do victim precipitated Menai g they do something which triggered the events
Evaluation of positivist victimology
This is close to being victim blaming as 1/5 women in rapes are described as precipitated saying they were asking for it
Critical victimology
This is based on conflict theories and shares the same approach as critical criminology. Structural factors such as patriarchy or poverty make some people more likely to be victims. Also the states power to apply or deny the label of victim meaning victim status is a social construct which can be applied to some and denied to others
Evaluation of critical victimology
This disregards the role victims may play in bringing victimisation on themselves such as their own offending
Impact of victimisation
Crime may have a serious physical and emotional impact on its victims. Crime may create indirect victims such as family members or friends of the victims or people who witness the event. Crimes against minories send waves of harms that intimidate whole communities. Victims may suffer secondary victimisation by the CJS as rape victims are treated very poorly
