Survaillance Flashcards

Foucault
The panopticon is now a model of how power operates in society as a whole. Prisoners do not know if they are being watched so they behave. This is self surveillance. This is now the same structure in life such as gp’s, teachers, and pregnancy scans. It allows the few to watch the many
Evaluation of Foucault
Surveillance like cctv cameras are not always effective in preventing crime and Norris found that while cctv reduced crimes in car parks, it had little effect on other crime
Synoptic surveillance
Due to today’s media’s, the panopticon is reversed and the many can now watch the few. This is the synopticon where the public are constantly watching eachother and videoing, for example Matt Hancock being caught breaking Covid restrictions
Evaluation of synoptic surveillance
The idea of the synopticon is limited as under anti-terrorism laws, police how have the power to confiscate the cameras and phones of citizen journalists
Liquid surveillance
In society today, surveillance has become liquid meaning because citizens are constantly in the move surveillance can now track and trace. This is done through thing such as passport checks, cookies on the internet, and even our car number plates. It acts as big brother constantly following us
Evaluation of liquid surveillance
This type of surveillance leads to labelling and discriminate as cctv operations make discriminatory judgements on who amongst the thousands of people on their screens that they should focus on
