Ethnicity internal factors Flashcards
(5 cards)
Labeling and fulfilling prophecy
Racial stereotypes influence teacher labeling
Teachers will assume that black pupils will be disruptive and hopeless and challenge their authority
Given labels like ‘troublemakers’
leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy where they begin to internalize the labels and act accordingly this leads to a lack of motivation in school
ambitious black girls who experienced racism in lessons develop strategies to deal with racism like not taking part in class
this restricted their ability to achieve in schools
eval for labeling and self-fulfilling prophecy
Black Caribbean girls in year 11 who were given negative labels
Didnt develop an SFP as they rejected the labels and were determined to succeed
Racism in schools
racism is built into the way schools are run
leads to underachievement as they aren’t given the support needed to succeed
lack of ethnic teachers = less representation
more negatively judged
Pupil subcultures
due to being racialized by teachers
Rasta heads who felt they had been victims of a teacher racism
Formed subcultures where they arrived late to less intimidated other students and therefore failed at school
