Research shows that gender roles have not changed that much

Changes in the economy linking to achievement?

A

Globalisation has led to a decline in manufacturing jobs in the UK
There are fewer traditional manual jobs which are what most working-class men do
boys no longer see the point in working hard as they’re are no jobs for them = fatalistic attitude
Girls
More service sectors have replaced manual jobs
economy places high regard on communication skills and office jobs
These suit traits of many women who will increase their achievement as it motivates them

Some working-class boys experience a crisis of masculinity as they feel the workplace demands skills that are better suited to women
Therefore they lack motivation and self-esteem so don’t try at school
